The Vivian Girls say and do a lot of stupid things. I would not, for instance, invite them to hang out at TGIF’s with office drones who think Matt Pond P.A. is “edgy.” However they do write some pretty good lo-fi songs and were the toast of indie Brooklyn by the end of 2008. This week they are playing South By Southwest in Austin:
Now you can invite all of your punk rock friends whom they would approve of and hear them at Kilby Court on May 2. If the venue can provide the inhuman amounts of reverb the Vivian Girls require, their harmonies should be pretty enjoyable.
I’ll be at the show although I did not add last year’s self-titled debut to my Must Buy list as I did their frequent stagemates Crystal Stilts–I just could not get it into my DNA.
We’re likely to hear material from their unreleased second album. At their blog, Vivian Girls say:
“Right now we are in Costa Mesa, California recording our second album at the Distillery. Yesterday was awesome, we set everything up and tracked 6 songs…9 more songs today! “
Salt Lake is lucky to get such a great show on a Saturday night, rather than picking up a mid-week or Sunday night show while the band heads to Denver or Portland. Looking forward to it.
You know, Kevin… there is a really great band I KNOW you’ll love.
It’s called Big Head Todd…
